Radon exposure is a health hazard with a simple solution, and tests should be conducted before each Real Estate transaction or every two years. Radon- a byproduct of uranium that is buried beneath the earth- is an invisible, odorless, naturally occurring radioactive gas that we are constantly exposed to at low levels. Radon which breaks down into harmful progenies are harmful to your health when inhaled. It is believed that Radon seeps into the home and if it gets trapped, can build up and create harmful levels of exposure. Research suggests that higher levels of Radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer other than smoking. EPA recommends mitigation on any homes or buildings that measure 4 Pci/L or greater. Radon levels fluctuate under various conditions and the only way to get current and accurate measurements of Radon levels is to have a professional test conducted by a licensed Home Inspector or certified Indoor Air Quality specialist. Tests take 3-7 days to conduct, are sent to be analyzed by a certified lab, and results are available within 1-2 weeks.
